Reading from a Torah scroll
The Torah is traditionally written on parchment, which is rolled, rather than using newer techniques such as paper, book binding and printing presses. The Torah scroll is treated with respect, and in some ways almost as one would treat an honored person.
The Torah scroll is so central to Judaism, and to Jews, "the people of the book", that it is sometimes used as a symbol of Judaism.
