In ancient religions, people appeased the gods or made requests with sacrifices. Like most of the people practicing other religions around them, the early Jews made sacrifices. Over time there was a change to prayer and good deeds. (There are still some kinds of ritual sacrifice, such as fasting.)
Prayer takes many forms:
- talking to G-d
- reciting ritual words
